“A big day in Memphis” for black entrepreneurs
“I have the impression that we are in competition. It doesn’t create an atmosphere for growth, ”said Joshua Henderson.
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – A native of Memphis is doing his part to make sure he showcases and retains the town’s talent. Local 24 News reporter Brittani Moncrease introduces us to Joshua Henderson as he hosts a networking event for black entrepreneurs called “A Great Day in Memphis”.
There is a lot to be said for the city of Memphis. There is culture, music and people. With so much talent, Memphis native Joshua Henderson is on a mission to keep him local.
“I spent seven years in Harlem, New York. There was a famous event or photo rather called a big day in Harlem where all the jazz musicians came together to take advantage of each other’s talents and make great music, ”said Henderson, creator of“ A Great. Day in Memphis ”.
It’s an energy that Henderson is channeling here. He kicked off the annual event, “A beautiful day in Memphis. “
“The event aims to create a safe space for the creative community in Memphis, Tennessee, not only to inspire and equip, but also to maintain some of the talent we have here,” said Henderson.
The networking event is in its third year and attracts local black entrepreneurs.
“We have Dayna from Google. She will first explain to entrepreneurs how they can grow their business using Google, ”said Henderson. “I have Tony Smith and Briannaca Saulsberry. They are both event coordinators in the city… We have Kenneth Worles, who is also a marketer and real estate guru.
It is a chance for black entrepreneurs to work together, not against.
“I have the impression that we are in competition. It does not create an atmosphere conducive to growth. I also feel like we don’t feel safe in a lot of places to dream big. I wanted to create a safe space for dreamers and designers to see big and also have the resources in the room to help them with that growth, ”said Henderson.
Growth is not just for individuals, but also for the city of Memphis.
“If we want to see Memphis in a New York, Atlanta, LA conversation, we have to come together,” Henderson said. “A great friend of mine, Gene Robinson, said to me, ‘We all serve each other. This is how we can come together.
